A Venezuelan kayaker, Adrián Simancas, became a global sensation this week after being caught in the mouth of a whale. Adrián told reporters that he felt a slimy texture on his face and had started to think how he might survive inside the humpback whale “like Pinocchio”, before it spat him back out within seconds. I wonder how many people would think similarly, comparing the situation to a fictional character, rather than to the real-life experience of Jonah? Perhaps most people think of Jonah as fictional, from a story book, but the fact that Jesus referred to the incident with Jonah and the ‘great fish’ (Matthew 12:39-41) shows it to be true.
Jesus was able to point to it as a sign of His death, burial and resurrection and gave a message of grace and salvation… if only people would listen to it.
