Sunday Thought – 24.11.24

How much would you pay for a banana attached to a wall with a piece of duck-tape? $6.2m (£4.9m)?! That is what someone paid in a Sotheby’s auction in New York last week (https://www.sothebys.com). The artwork, called ‘Comedian’, comes with instructions on how to replace the banana whenever it rots so, even though it was originally created by Maurizio Cattelan in 2019, the owner (or anyone living with or working for them) becomes the ‘artist’ over time. In the world of high art usually it matters who created a unique piece but should it in this instance?

Jesus Christ died on a Roman cross, just as lots of other people did, but Christians argue that his death wasn’t a repeat of previous executions. They believe that no-one else could have done what he did in voluntarily paying the price for others’ sin while dying, an immeasurable price for which there was none apart from Jesus who could be a sinless sacrifice as the Jewish law required: “… without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (NIV, Hebrews 9:22).

When Christians remember what Jesus did via eating bread and drinking wine (called Communion), they remember the cost of their salvation and Jesus’ great love for them. Today, are you saying thank you for the price he paid?

The price is paid, alleluia
Amazing grace, so strong and sure
And so with all my heart
My life in every part
I live to thank You for
The price You paid
