“The Middle East is in turmoil. International diplomacy is in overdrive. And for once many in Israel, Lebanon and Iran have something in common – a war of nerves. They worry and they wait for what may come next. It feels like the whole region is holding its breath.”
(Orla Guerin, BBC Senior International Correspondent)

Our world seems in turmoil wherever we look, whether it be economically, socially, through conflicts, lack of food or the increasing effects of climate change. How can this world find peace? Two thousand years ago, in a world filled with just as many problems, Jesus Christ gave the answer, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (NIV, Matthew 11:28-29).

There are several parts to this statement. There is an invitation, “come”; a requirement, “take my yoke” (which meant to become a disciple); and an instruction, “learn” – this last may seem a strange one but it is based in the belief that the more a person learns about the love of God, the more they will find peace in him.

Christians believe that by following these three things we can find rest for our souls: Jesus himself is the answer. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (NIV, John 14:27). Is this your solution to the question of peace?

Prayer Points for the Week:

  • Pray for the Scarborough Beach Mission and other events young Christians are involved in this summer.
  • Pray for those affected by this weekend’s terror attacks in Germany and France.
  • Please pray for the situations in Ukraine and the Middle East. For peace; for aid to get through to those in need; for those mourning the loss of loved ones.
