Sunday Thought – 17.11.24

For many, the name Samantha Harvey will not be familiar. For those interested in literature however, she will be instantly recognised as having this week been announced as the winner of the prestigious Booker Prize 2024 for her novel Orbital (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cj0jellz4zro). The award (worth £50,000) is given for the best English language novel published annually in the UK and Ireland. Undoubtedly on account of this accolade, her subsequent writings will attract significantly more readers and may be classified as “best-sellers”.

The Bible is the best-selling book of all time according to Guinness World Records with an estimated over 5 billion copies printed and either sold or given away freely since the invention of the printing press. As a book it is a compilation of texts originally written over a period of hundreds of years in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. These texts include instructions, poetry, histories and prophecies. Crucially, Christians believe that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (NIV, 2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Are you regularly reading the best-selling Bible?

Prayer Points for the Week:

  • Pray that the predicted incoming cold weather in the UK wouldn’t cause too much disruption.
  • Pray for a peaceful and safe resolution to the police blockade of illegal miners in South Africa.
  • Please pray for the situations in Ukraine and the Middle East. For peace; for aid to get through to those in need; for those mourning the loss of loved ones.
